I recently discovered I was on a quest of some sorts… the only logical explanation must be the 34% of my Scandinavian heritage. Regardless of the reason one thing is clear, I absolutely must find the best chicken wings in Huntsville, AL. This Secondary Adventure has taken me to some of the most unique places across the city, which have not only yielded great results it has also provided great insight into what all Huntsville has to offer. In this blog I will list 10 of these great establishments ending with, in my opinion, the best. By the way, I had no idea how much work this would take… longest project ever.
10: Mellow Mushroom (Jones Valley)
In a shocking turn of events, one of the most famous and unique pizza joints boast a hidden secret. Nestled in the Munchies section on the menu, you will find Oven Roasted Wings. Personally as you will see trend, I prefer lemon pepper or plain. Mellow Mushroom offers a few more than my basic preferences, one of the most interesting would be “Sweet Thai Chili”. Important note, do not expect to fill up on wings, they are only offered in Half (5) or Whole (10) quantities. In respect to the quality of taste, the main point will be the tenderness. Unlike some wings I have found, typically through flash frying, have been more tough on the exterior. The most disappointing portion of this wing would be the flavor. Without any sauce or seasoning one would hope the smokey flavor would replace to provide a rich taste. The bar wasn’t quite met on this portion. Over all I would say for a “Munchie” or appetizer that this would be a great choice.
9: Touchdown Wing’s
Whoa, watch out, there are new kids on the block. No, not the hot boy band from the late 1980’s early 1990’s. Rather the new South Huntsville wing stop conveniently located just off South Memorial Parkway. One thing I promised myself when trying these wings was to be open minded. Mainly because they had been open less than 24 hours. Flavor was not terrible, imagine what a smaller wing would taste like after being deep fried. There you have it, that is exactly what it was. The winning factor here is the lemon pepper seasoning, it isn’t too over powering on the salt but more on focus the lemon zest. Paired with their french fries, very similar to the fries offered at their distant competitor Wings to Go. My recommendation would be to stay with the crispy yet juicy boneless option at this new gem.
8: Tim’s Cajun Kitchen
Mardi Gras, Gators, Gumbo, Jambalaya and Bourbon Street. These are the thoughts that run through my head anytime I hear Cajun. Even during my travels through Louisiana it had never occurred to me to search out wings. Not until I visited one of the best hidden gems Huntsville has to offer, a tan and colorfully painted building right off Jordan Lane near I-565. When I was urged to try the wings, I jumped on the chance. Spice is the first bite with this tasty treat, however it is leveled out by the hours spent in the smoker. If flavor is your key focus when searching great wings, this might not be the stop for you. If you prefer spice and smoke, this is home.
7: Jim N’ Nick’s
Can you image having to wait an hour to sit and eat wings? Ugh, me either, that is why Jim N’ Nick’s comes in fast with a drive thru. Game changer right? They knock mini muffins and brisket out of the park, but how do they fare around the coveted wing? First thing is first, quantity, no self respecting wing connoisseurs would want only a single option. Yet here I am staring down 4 to-go boxes, each with 5 wings. One of the first places to capture my attention in the first bite on flavor alone. Not to smokey and not fried which made it really easy on my beard and teeth. Absolutely no need for seasoning with the aroma provided by other seasoned meats in the same smoker. I cannot move on without recommending a sweet mini muffin to complement these 5 treats.
6: Whole Foods Market
Grocery stores are not typically on the list of “Best Places” to get wings… or any food for that matter. But for the next two stops, that simply isn’t true. One part of my experience includes weight of the wings, not just to measure how many I order, mainly to ensure each wing contains enough meat to complement the flavor. Smaller wings are not terrible, as proven here, however the must follow the same steps. Do not order small wings that are deep fried, luckily that didn’t happen. The Buffalo Sauce was a different mix, not my usual I know, but I was far from disappointed. The baked wings allowed a tender wing to form, lacking smoke as it usually could as it wasn’t smoked, also allowing it to fall off the bone. The buffalo sauce did not distract from the flavor, as it easily can do if it is to spicy. This is a quick great place to grab lunch, obviously wings would be the main suggestion.
5: The Fresh Market
The wild wild west was the great unknown, immigrants would venture into the great plains in search of land, gold, and fresh opportunities. This is how I see The Fresh Market’s approach to fresh savory wings. Quality over quantity, Fresh Market did both. The size of the wings are among the largest I have found. The rotisserie method of cooking allows for a great flavor with a consistent cook through. Seasoning nor sauces are needed with these savory delights. Coming in half way through the list, it is the first option when it comes to wings in the grocery chain industry.
4: Ale’s Kitchen
Breweries are in abundance in Huntsville, and a few have identified a huge opportunity in taking the experience to the next level. What could that be you may ask? No not the secret speakeasy hidden in this stop, it is the food! At first look I thought pork, based of the logo, would be the main item. Through more reading I found the best option, Wings & Fries. Once my table was blessed with the metal plate pictured here I dug straight in. The wings were great a size, not to mentioned proportioned perfectly between flats & drums. Flavor with these would be more basic allowing full focus on the unique sauce options, so if you prefer plain no sauce keep that in mind. The crispy exterior from the fry was perfect as it would provide a nice crunch after taking a swim in the buffalo sauce. Result from this visit, Unique beer and juicy wings, how can you go wrong?
3: Baumhower’s Victory Grille
This was probably the hardest stop through the entire adventure while trying wings across the city. Solely due to parking, very packed, limited spaces. Plan to have a wait and needing walking shoes, or you can order ahead. I have had Baumhower’s wings before, just not in their new location. Before you say it, the food some how changed for the better. 1lbs of wings sounded like a lot, in regards to number of wings it wasn’t, but when you see (pictured left) they were loaded with size. These bad boys were loaded with flavor I would venture to say sauce options isn’t needed. I however did try it with lemon pepper, I was surprised to learn that they add a spice to the lemon pepper. Similar to a buffalo zest. Only ending recommendation would be to smoke for a while instead of frying, this will allow more flavor to just intensify the experience.
2: Shababy’s Rib Shack
The surprising runner up falls to Shababy’s Rib Shack, at their brand new location in Jones Valley right next to YouFit Gym. One of the hardest parts of staying dedicated to the gym, especially starting out the new year, is walking out of said gym to the deep smell of Bar-B-Q less than 100 yards away. Shababy’s is not just a stop for smoked lightly seasoned lemon pepper wings, but homemade Banana Pudding. Even your kid’s can enjoy a nice meal, like the Mini Burger Basket. I digress, back to the main subject, those Smoked Wings. They offer a plain option, but I highly suggest the lightly seasoned Lemon Pepper. It provides a nice zest to complement the smokey flavor. Hushpuppies should be provided as a side for Wings much more often, Well done Shababy’s.
1: Ted’s Bar-B-Q (Five Points)
Finally we have reached #1, Ted’s Bar-B-Q, more specifically the Ted’s at 212 Andrew Jackson Way. Most Huntsville Residents would suggest this location primarily based on the Bar-B-Q ribs or perhaps the smoked turkey baked potato. However their hidden gem is the Smoked Signature Wings. For a wing lover, like myself, I search for more flavor than sauce/seasoning. I believe the smoke and marination will make or break the success of the wing. Ted’s clearly capitalizes on this, intently. When you take a bite of these meaty wings you are immediately greeted by the smoke from the hours of cooking. Ted’s offer a sauce option for this selection, but in my personal opinion, it is not needed.
